HAIRSPRAY June 4-14

The 1950’s are over and change is in the air! HAIRSPRAY, winner of 8 Tony Awards including Best Musical, is a family-friendly musical piled bouffant high with laughter, romance, and deliriously tuneful songs. It’s 1962 in Baltimore, and the lovable plus-size teen Tracy Turnblad has only one desire — to dance on the popular Corny Collins Show. When her dream comes true, Tracy is transformed from social outcast to sudden star. She must use her newfound power to dethrone the reigning Teen Queen, win the affections of heartthrob Link Larkin, and integrate a TV network, all without denting her ‘do!

THE BIG MEAL June 18-27, 2015

a play by Dan LeFranc

A stunning, big-hearted play that spans nearly eighty years in roughly ninety minutes, THE BIG MEAL tells the extraordinary story of an ordinary family. Somewhere in America, in a typical suburban restaurant on a typical night, Sam and Nicole first meet. Sparks fly. And so begins an expansive tale that traverses five generations of a modern family, from first kiss to final goodbye. Though it premiered in 2011, THE BIG MEAL already feels like a classic; Pulitzer Prize Winner Annie Baker called it “The greatest play ever written.”In the spirit of Thornton Wilder’s plays (Our Town, The Long Christmas Dinner), THE BIG MEAL is humorous, human and ambitious.

PETER PAN July 2-12, 2015

Lyrics by Carolyn Leigh; Music by Morris “Moose” Charlap; Additional Lyrics by Betty Comden and Adolph Green; Additional Music by Jule Styne; Original Direction & Choreogrpahy by Jerome Robbins Based on the play by Sir James M. Barrie

For the first time ever at Timber Lake Playhouse, Broadway’s timeless classic musical whisks you away to a place where dreams are born and no one ever grows up! Featuring the iconic songs “I’m Flying,” “I’ve Gotta Crow,” “I Won’t Grow Up,” and “Never Never Land,” and a rousing book full of magic, warmth, and adventure,PETER PAN is the perfect show for the child in all of us who dreamed of soaring high and never growing up. This Tony Award-winning musical has been performed around the world and delighted audiences for 60 years since Mary Martin first taught us to fly.

GREATER TUNA July 16-25, 2015

a play by Jaston Williams, Ed Howard & Joe Sears

GREATER TUNA is the hilarious comedy about the third smallest town in Texas, where the Lion’s Club is too liberal and Patsy Cline never dies. The eclectic band of citizens that make up this town are portrayed by only two performers, making this send-up of life in rural America even more delightful as they depict all of the inhabitants of Tuna — men, women, children and animals. The action takes place in the early Eighties, though nothing in Tuna has changed since then, anyway.

BIG FISH July 30-August 9, 2015

Book by John August; Music and Lyrics by Andrew Lippa; Based on the novel BIG FISH by Daniel Wallace
and the Columbia Motion Picture
 written by John August

Based on the celebrated novel and the acclaimed film directed by Tim Burton, BIG FISH is the story of Edward Bloom, a traveling salesman whose incredible, larger-than-life stories thrill everyone around him – most of all, his adoring wife Sandra. But their son Will, about to have a child of his own, is determined to find the truth behind his father’s epic tales, hoping to reveal the real man behind the rollicking fantasy life. Overflowing with heart, humor and spectacular stage magic BIG FISH is an extraordinary new Broadway musical that reminds us why we love going to the theatre – for an experience richer, funnier and BIGGER than life itself. “A heartfelt, powerful and movingly scored new American Musical …” – Chris Jones, Chicago Tribune.

BIG RIVER: The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn August 13-23, 2015

Music by Roger Miller; Lyrics by Roger Miller; Book by William Hauptman; Adapted from the novel by Mark Twain

Propelled by an award winning score from Roger Miller, the king of country music, this journey down the mighty Mississippi provides a brilliantly theatrical celebration of pure Americana. Twain’s timeless classic is played out by actor-musicians to the sound of country and bluegrass as irrepressible Huck Finn helps his friend Jim, a slave, escape to freedom at the mouth of the Ohio River. Their adventures are hilarious, suspenseful and heartwarming, bringing to life our favorite characters from the novel-the Widow Douglas and her stern sister, Miss Watson; the King and Duke, who may or may not be as harmless as they seem; Huck’s partner in crime, Tom Sawyer, and their rowdy gang of pals; Huck’s drunken father, the sinister Pap Finn; and the lovely Mary Jane Wilkes.

Bald Eagles Visit Roberts’ Roost Country Guest House

Bald Eagle Visits Roberts' Roost

Bald Eagle Visits Roberts’ Roost

Spring migration has begun in Northwest Illinois. The Bald Eagles are on the move to their summer homes up north. We have had quite a few visits this winter from the visiting Bald Eagles. This one was photographed in the tree at the front of Roberts’ Roost Country Guest House.

Bald Eagle on the Original Roberts' Farm

Bald Eagle on the Original Roberts’ Farm

This Bald Eagle was resting in the tree on the original “Old Roberts’ Farm”. At the time my Grandfather died in 1971, Bald Eagles were not very common in the area. He would have been very honored to have this Bald Eagle sitting in the tree on the farm he purchased from his grandfather 101 years ago, in 1914.

The gentleman you can see to the left of the photo is my Uncle Glen who built Roberts’ Roost in 1974 after the death of my grandfather and he needed to move from the original Roberts’ Homestead.

Here are a couple close-ups of the visiting Bald Eagles resting at Roberts’ Roost Country Guest House.

Book your stay at Roberts’ Roost now and you never know you may be able to watch the Bald Eagles from the chairs on the front step of Roberts’ Roost Country Guest House. All winter, hardly a day has gone by that we have not been able to spot a Bald Eagle or two from the yard of Roberts’ Roost Country Guest House. It would have made my family very proud.

The Birds of Roberts’ Roost Country Guest House

Filling the Feeders at Roberts' Roost Country Guest House

Filling the Feeders at Roberts’ Roost Country Guest House

Filling the bird feeders is a very integral part of the upkeep at Roberts’ Roost Country Guest House. We want our guests to be able to experience as much nature and wildlife as possible during their visit. To accomplish this we place as many bird feeders and gardens around the perimeter of the yard as possible. Every couple days, Dennis replenishes the feeders in order to draw the largest variety of birds to the yard.

Last week we had this leucistic House Finch at the feeder.

We were also very fortunate to be able to view from the yard, these magnificent Bald Eagles.

Bald Eagles Visiting Roberts’ Roost Country Guest House January 11th 2015

It’s that time of year! The Bald Eagles have arrived in our area. The numbers of Bald Eagles in the surrounding area around Roberts’ Roost Country Guest House will vary from day to day according to the weather conditions. As the Mississippi River freezes and the fish supply gets smaller, the Bald Eagles that don’t move farther south down the river, will move inland looking for food sources. On January 11th, we had six Bald Eagles within a 1/4 mile of Roberts’ Roost Country Guest House searching for food. The two photos I have included here were taken from the Roberts’ Roost Country Guest House front yard.
