We have been working on the Mailbox Garden at Roberts’ Roost. Still have more work to do!
Here are photos of the kitchen at Roberts’ Roost Country Guest House! The kitchen comes complete with a full size stove, refrigerator/freezer, and microwave. It is completely furnished with dishes, silverware, glasses, pots and pans, toaster, coffee pot, tea pot, crock pot, and other kitchen utensils. Sorry there currently is not a dishwasher or ice cube maker, but ice cube trays and hand dish-washing detergent is supplied, along with paper towels, aluminum foil, and plastic wrap. There is also a new gas grill available for your outside cooking needs along with outside seating areas.
We just finished the fire pit at Roberts’ Roost last night and decided to try it out with a potluck inviting our neighbors from home. What a great evening, the weather was beautiful, no insects, amazing sky with the Big Dipper in full view, great company, and delicious marshmallows, the Hershey candy bars weren’t bad either! We also got to add a new yard bird to the list, the Eastern Screech Owl. We had just sat down and had two of them calling, one from the timber to the east and the other just to the north of where we were sitting. The one to the north was very vocal and called for quite awhile. Such a great start to the Fall season!
Okay, I couldn’t resist sharing this cute photo of my neighbor’s cows with all of you. Such an adorable pair!

Welcome to the beginnings of Roberts’ Roost Country Guest House. Roberts’ Roost, owned by Connie, is a little two bedroom, one bathroom, living room and kitchen bungalow that was built in 1974 by Connie’s uncle, Glen Roberts. After Glen’s death, it was purchased by Connie’s father, Herman Roberts and then later passed on to Connie. The one-third acre parcel of land the house is built on, was once part of the Roberts family farm. The farm was originally purchased by Connie’s great great grandfather and grandmother in 1860.
2014 marks the 100th anniversary of the farm being purchased by Harman Augustus (Gust) Roberts on March 3rd, 1914. Gust and Eliza Brunner Roberts went on to raise 16 children on the 160 acre family homestead with it remaining in the Roberts family until 1974 when it was sold at auction after Gust’s death. The one third acre of serene countryside that contains Roberts’ Roost is the last remaining parcel of the homestead left in the Roberts family. Since Connie’s fathers death, in 2004, Connie and Dennis’s daughter and granddaughter have resided in the house. Now, ten years later the house is being turned into a country garden guest house retreat.
Renovations are beginning shortly with a new furnace and central air conditioning unit. Updates on the house will be completed and old gardens refreshed and some new gardens established. We are hoping for an opening in August 2014. Roberts’ Roost Country Guest House is conveniently located six minutes from downtown Savanna and six miles from historic Mt. Carroll, Illinois.
